2nd Page SEO Companies: Just Say No!

Search engine optimization, anyone who owns a website these days knows what that phrase means… or do they? I see a lot of SEO related articles and companies talking about increasing your site traffic but the truth is that increasing your traffic is actually a different animal than pure SEO work. SEO is simply that…it’s optimizing your website’s search potential on the search engines, period. The work involved in increasing ones traffic and sales is called Internet Marketing. While SEO and Internet Marketing are surely related they each require a different set of skills and pure SEO work alone does not guarantee traffic, nor increased sales.

If part of your plan for gaining an increase in website traffic is to obtain that traffic from the search engines then you’re likely going to need the help of an SEO company who is good enough to get you to page 1 on the search engine result pages. I say page 1 because in most cases page 2 is all but useless for attracting any traffic whatsoever. You might get SOME traffic from a page 2 listing but I can promise the amount you’ll see from that won’t pay your SEO fees. So, if page 1 is your goal then (and it should be, for at least a couple of highly popular and relevant terms to your industry) how can you determine which SEO company can really get the job done for you?… are you going to choose someone from page 2 of your search results? Of course not, common sense tells us that we should probably have better luck if we pick someone from page 1. Chances are, if they’ve attained a first page ranking for themselves then they can help you get there too!

Too many times I’ve heard the excuse that it’s the “shoe salesman who has kids at home with worn out shoes” syndrome. Don’t buy into it, just say NO! You’re going to have to pay a lot of money up front and this is a pair of shoes you will not be able to try on before buying so at least make certain that your SEO company in question is at least ranking well themselves, regardless of some pre-determined (and possibly ill motivated) references they may hand you.

You’re going to need first page results for your own site so it’s vital for you to see your prospective SEO company also being on the first page because it’s your best clue as to whether or not they’re even capable of getting you there to begin with. Page 2 for all but the most popular phrases will yield little to no traffic for you, remember that.

As far as search engine traffic is concerned, page 1 is where it’s at, pure and simple. If you end up talking with someone you really like but they’re not on page 1 then be insistent on only hiring them if their rates are based upon some pre-determined results instead of all cash up front. Either way, this is your best bet.
