What Is A Blog And What Is It Used For

Weblog was the term originally used to describe what we now call a blog. These began as online diaries. Blogs were often used to describe a time line of events or experiences. They continue to do that but they also perform other functions. Blogs are used by online marketers, galleries, businesses, people wanting to offer music, political commentary, current events, and individuals sharing personal experiences.

Most businesses of all sizes, and many individuals have blogs. The reasons for having a blog may be different depending on the desires and needs of each individual or business.

A blog allows communication in a way that the average static site does not. You or someone you assign can readily post new material. In contrast to static sites, a blog encourages your readers to communicate with you by way of comments. This give and take nature of the blog helps generate rapport with your readers. Larger businesses or organizations also use blogs as a means of internal communication between groups or individuals.

With a blog, it’s easy to add or remove content, and it can be done by anyone who has about the same skills required to send an email. The ease of use is a big plus for smaller organizations who don’t have staff dedicated to maintaining a site.

Blog content can be kept current much easier than a static site. Posting written content or a variety of media can be done in a few minutes without the need for special web design skills.

Monetizing your blog is relatively simple. There are a variety of plugins and widgets that facilitate advertising products and affiliate programs, with a blog. Some of these can actually be put on auto-pilot with content frequently being updated and relevant to your posts.

Branding yourself or your business is also done easier with a blog. The dynamic nature of a blog allows it to be more “conversational”. This gives readers a more personal feel. A relationship, albeit a virtual one, develops with your readers.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is made simple with some of the plugins that are available. Posts can be tagged with relevant keywords and phrases. Other plugins that distribute your content to social media as well as RSS feeds also get your content out to more places, faster.

The cost in terms of both time and money, is considerably less than a static site. A blog can be set up and look okay in less than an hour. It can be cost free if you host your blog on a blog hosting site. I should say though, I do not recommend that if you plan to use the blog for a business.

Blogging can be really enjoyable, writing articles, interacting with readers, and monetizing your blog, each are rewarding in their own way.
